The Things You Find (no. 2, I think, in a continuing series)…

small slice of the Galaxy a la Trek...While hunting up a detail for Wizard’s Holiday, I ran across something really useful: plan views of the Milky Way galaxy, derived from data from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey being run by the Radio Astronomy Observatory of the University of Calgary.

What really amused me, though, is the fourth of the plan views, which has some distinctly non-scientific data plotted on it…

When I have some time I’m going to pull out the galactic map I made for my own purposes years and years ago, from then-available data, while I was working on My Enemy, My Ally, with an eye to figuring out where the boundaries of the various empires were. It’ll be funny to see whether my ideas were even in the ballpark with what the fourth map shows. (That said, I’m not sure what dataset the people at Sector 0-0-1 might have been using. Come to think of it, I’m not sure what dataset I was using…)

Meanwhile, at least I now know the name for the Galactic arm in which the planet Alaalu and its primary are embedded. So, on to other things…
