I’m gonna be on Internet Talk Radio

by Diane Duane

This is going to be fun!

The excellent Chris Meadows (aka Robotech Master) has written an article on serializing novels on the Internet for the weblog at his TeleRead site, which deals with various aspects of electronic reading (e-books, reading on PDAs, online reading, digital libraries, etc.).

Chris is also hosting an online roundtable discussion this weekend on the art of online novel serialization (along the lines of the “Street Performer Protocol”), and he kindly asked me if I’d like to come along and chat with the attendees about the ins and outs of publishing the serial novel The Big Meow as I’ve experienced them so far. So on Saturday, December 16th, at 8 PM UT (that’s 3 PM [US] EST, noon [US] PST), I’ll be there in chatspace (via Talkshoe.com) with the rest of the crowd.

Interested parties are more than welcome to come along and participate! Here’s where it’s happening:

Chris has a how-to page right here with all the necessary details on how to get in / participate. If you just want to listen, you just click on the “listen-only” button on the page and you’re fine. (For the more technically-abled who want to talk as well as listen, you’ll want to be using a SIP-enabled VOIP application such as SJPhone for Windows or XMeeting for OS X, and there’s some coaching here in the Talkshoe forums.)

BTW, to the VoIP newbies among you: I was completely clueless at this, and it only took me about half an hour to get set up. But if you’re a Windows user, I do recommend the VoIP client FWD Communicator [aka Pulver Communicator], which is nice and simple to use.

Anyway, see you there!

Thanks for the kind words—and thanks for agreeing to attend! You could have knocked me over with a feather—and not a very large feather, either.

I’ve also set up a page of simplified instructions for getting set up with TalkShoe and a suitable phone or VOIP client. You might want to try the software out early, calling in to whatever random TalkShoe show that’s on at the moment catches your interest, so you know how it works.

And if anyone needs further help getting set up, just drop me a line and I’ll be glad to assist.

FYI—it’s the TalkShoe Java client that allows you to participate via text chat. It doesn’t matter what VoIP app you use to get in; I think SJPhone or X-Lite are the best for Windows or Linux. I know very little about XMeeting as I don’t have a Mac capable of running it.

Yep, got that. Been tweaking the blog entries a little to reflect that. Good info page, BTW!

Heard about this on the Liaden list also, where Steve and Sharon are *also* doing a serialised book 😉

Might or might not be able to participate: my laptop hard-drive has been visited by the grim bit-reaper, and the chances of getting another by Saturday evening, *and* setting it all up with Internet connectivity, are slim at best.

Best wishes, and hope there’s some sort of log/transcript for those of us unable to make it on time.
